Strengthening Families

Strengthening Families 12-16 (higher risk youth)

Early Teens and High School

The Strengthening Families Program (SFP 12-16) is an evidence-based prevention program for parents and children ages 12-16 in higher risk families.  SFP consists of parenting skills, children’s life skills, and family skills training courses taught together in fourteen 2-hour group sessions preceded by a meal that includes informal family practice time and group leader coaching.  SFP was designed in 14 sessions to assure sufficient dosage to promote behavior change in high risk families.

The next cycle of SFP 12-16 begins on January 24, 2012 and ends on April 24, 2012.  Meeting dates can be found on the Events Calendar.

Strengthening Families 10-14

Pre-High School

The Strengthening Families program (SFP 10-14) is designed for parents and their children ages 10-14 (or 5th through 8th grade).  The program uses family systems, and cognitive-behavioral approaches to increase resilience and reduce risk factors for behavioral, emotional, academic, and social problems.  Parents meet separately for the first hour to learn to increase desired behaviors in children by increasing attention and rewards for positive behaviors.  They also learn about clear communication, effective discipline, substance use, problem solving, and limit setting.  The first hour the children will meet separately to learn how to understand feelings, control their anger, resist peer pressure, comply with parental rules, solve problems, and communicate effectively.  The second hour of the program families engage in structured family activities, practice therapeutic child play, conduct family meetings, learn communication skills, practice effective discipline, reinforce positive behaviors in each other, and plan family activities together.

The next cycle of SFP 10-14 begins on February 2, 2012 and ends on March 15, 2012.  Meeting dates can be found on the Events Calendar.
